What This Does

AI Pickup Tracking monitors whether your published content gets cited by AI chatbots. Each article gets a citation score (0-100) showing which platforms reference it and when citations were first detected.

This feature focuses on content-level tracking — monitoring individual articles you publish to see if they earn AI citations over time. For domain-level AI visibility, see the AI Visibility Dashboard.

When to Use This

  • After publishing: Check if new content gets picked up by AI within 30-90 days
  • Content audit: Identify which articles earn AI citations (for pattern analysis)
  • ROI measurement: See which content investments pay off with AI visibility
  • Success patterns: Find what makes content citation-worthy

How It Works

Automatic Tracking

Weekly scan: Every week, the system checks your published content against AI platforms to detect new citations.

Platforms tracked:

  • Google AI Overview (in search results)
  • ChatGPT (via historical mention data)

What gets tracked: All published content from the last 90 days with valid URLs.

How matching works: The system uses search engine intelligence to scan for your domain mentions across AI platforms, then matches returned URLs against your content inventory.

Citation Detection

When your content is found in AI responses, the system records:

Platform: Which AI platform cited it (Google AI or ChatGPT) First seen: Date citation was first detected Query: The question that triggered the mention Context: Snippet of the AI's response showing how your content was referenced

Citation Score Calculation

Each piece of content gets a score from 0-100:

  • 0 points: Not cited
  • 50 points: Cited by one platform (Google AI or ChatGPT)
  • 100 points: Cited by both platforms

The score updates automatically when new citations are detected.

Viewing Your Tracking Data

Content Hub Integration

Navigate to Content Hub > All Content and look for citation indicators on each article:

Green checkmark: Content is cited by AI (citation score > 0) Gray icon: Not yet cited (citation score = 0)

Click any article to see full citation details.

Filtering by Citation Status

Use the AI Citation Status filter to view:

Cited Content Only: Articles earning AI visibility Not Cited: Articles to optimize for better AI pickup

Individual Content View

On any content detail page, the AI Pickup section shows:

Citation Score: 0-100 score with platform breakdown Platforms: Which AI platforms cite this content First Detected: When each platform's citation was first seen Triggering Queries: Questions that generated AI responses citing your content Context Snippets: How the AI referenced your content

Taking Action on Results

Content Cited by AI

Analyze what worked:

  • Content structure (did you use lists, tables, clear sections?)
  • Content depth (word count, comprehensiveness)
  • Authority signals (author bio, data sources, citations)
  • Topic selection (queries with high AI search volume)

Create more like it: Use successful content as templates for future articles.

Track performance: Monitor if AI citations correlate with traffic increases.

Content Not Cited

Check age first: Content needs 30-60 days for AI platforms to discover it.

Optimize for AI pickup:

  1. Add structure: Use H2s, numbered lists, comparison tables
  2. Increase depth: Expand to 2,000+ words with comprehensive coverage
  3. Add data: Include statistics, research, case studies
  4. Show expertise: Add author credentials, cite authoritative sources
  5. Answer directly: Start sections with clear answers to common questions

Update and republish: After optimization, update the publish date to trigger reindexing.

Citation Pattern Analysis

Finding Success Patterns

The system automatically analyzes content that gets cited to identify patterns:

Structural elements: Common content structures in cited pages (lists, tables, sections) Average word count: Typical length of cited content Average H2 count: How many sections cited content typically has Common elements: Shared features (schema markup, author bios, data tables)

Where to find this: Navigate to Analytics > AI Visibility > Citation Patterns

Using Patterns in Briefs

When creating new keyword briefs, citation patterns for similar topics automatically appear in the brief's AI Pickup Recommendations section.

These recommendations show:

  • What structural elements to include
  • Ideal word count and section count
  • Content types that get cited most often
  • Top cited domains to reference as models

Understanding Alerts

Daily Citation Alerts

When enabled: The system checks for new citations daily at 9 AM.

What triggers an alert:

  • New content earns its first citation
  • Content earns a citation on a new platform (e.g., ChatGPT after already being cited by Google AI)

Alert contents:

  • Content title and URL
  • Platform that cited it
  • Query that triggered the mention
  • Context snippet showing the citation

Enable alerts: Settings > Notifications > Daily AI Citation Alerts

Weekly Digest

When sent: Every Friday at 10 AM

What's included:

  • New citations this week (content count and platform breakdown)
  • Top-performing content (highest citation scores)
  • Citation rate trend (this week vs. last week)
  • Opportunities (published content not yet cited but eligible)

Enable digest: Settings > Notifications > Weekly AI Visibility Digest

Best Practices

1. Wait 30-60 Days

AI platforms need time to discover, crawl, and index new content. Don't optimize for AI pickup until content has been live for at least 30 days.

2. Focus on Comprehensive Content

Cited content tends to be longer (2,000+ words), more structured (clear H2s), and more authoritative (data sources, author credentials).

3. Track Patterns, Not Individual Wins

A single citation doesn't mean much. Track which types of content earn citations consistently. Those are your successful patterns.

4. Combine with Traditional SEO

Content optimized for AI pickup usually performs well in traditional search too. Don't choose between SEO and AI optimization — do both.

5. Update High-Potential Content

If content ranks well in traditional search but isn't cited by AI, that's a missed opportunity. Optimize it with:

  • Better structure (lists, tables, clear sections)
  • More comprehensive answers
  • Authority signals (author bio, data sources)

6. Create Citation-Worthy Content First

Don't just publish more. Publish better. One comprehensive, well-structured article that earns AI citations beats ten generic posts that don't.

FAQ

Q: Why isn't my new content showing citations? AI platforms need 30-60 days to discover and index new content. Check again after 2 months.

Q: What's a good citation score? Any score above 0 means AI platforms find your content valuable enough to cite. Scores of 50+ (cited by multiple platforms) are strong signals of content quality.

Q: Can I see which specific sentences AI platforms quoted? Yes. The Context Snippet on each content detail page shows how AI referenced your content. Look for direct quotes vs. paraphrasing.

Q: Why is this separate from the AI Visibility Dashboard? The AI Visibility Dashboard tracks domain-level brand mentions (when AI platforms mention your brand by name). AI Pickup Tracking monitors content-level citations (when your published articles are referenced). Two different use cases.

Q: Does this track all AI platforms? Currently tracks Google AI Overview and ChatGPT via historical mention data. Real-time tracking for Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity requires additional setup (not included in standard plans).

Q: How do I improve my citation rate?

  1. Publish comprehensive, well-structured content
  2. Include data, statistics, and research
  3. Use clear sections with H2s and lists
  4. Add author credentials and expertise signals
  5. Cite authoritative sources (AI trusts content that cites other trusted sources)
  6. Update content quarterly to maintain freshness

Q: Can I export citation data? Yes. Use the Export button on the Content Hub page to download a CSV with citation scores, platforms, and queries for all content.

Q: Does AI pickup affect my search rankings? Not directly. However, content optimized for AI pickup tends to rank well in traditional search because it's comprehensive, well-structured, and authoritative.

Q: What if I don't have published content yet? AI Pickup Tracking only works with published content that has valid URLs. Generate and publish content first, then check back in 30-60 days to see citation results.
