What This Feature Does

AI Citation Alerts sends you daily email notifications when your content appears in AI chatbot responses. This tracks brand visibility across Google AI Overview and ChatGPT, giving you real-time awareness when AI systems recognize your content as authoritative.

Platforms monitored:

• Google AI Overview
• ChatGPT

Different from Weekly Digest:

• Daily alerts are for real-time notifications of new citations
• Weekly digest summarizes all AI visibility metrics

When to Use This

Use AI Citation Alerts to:

• Track brand authority: Know when AI platforms cite your content as a trusted source
• Measure content impact: See which content performs best in AI contexts
• Monitor competitive positioning: Get alerted when competitors are cited alongside your content
• Identify high-value opportunities: Discover which user queries trigger your content citations

How It Works

Daily scan (9 AM):

1. System checks for new citations across all AI platforms
2. Detects when your domain or published content appears in AI responses
3. Captures the user query, AI response context, and citation details
4. Groups alerts by content or domain-level mentions
5. Sends one consolidated email with all new citations

What triggers an alert:

• New citation detected: Your content is cited for the first time
• High-value query appearance: Citation appears for a query with significant search volume
• Competitor context: Your content and a competitor's are cited in the same AI response

Automation Schedule

AI citation tracking runs on a fixed schedule to ensure consistent monitoring:

Timing notes:

• All times are in UTC. Adjust for your local timezone.
• Alert emails typically arrive within 15 minutes of scan completion.
• If no new citations are detected, no alert email is sent.
• The weekly summary always sends, even if there were no changes (showing zero new citations).

How to Enable

From Settings:

1. Navigate to Settings → AI Visibility
2. Toggle AI Citation Alerts to Enabled
3. Configure your primary domain (if not already set)
4. Save changes

Requirements:

• Primary domain must be configured in tenant settings
• At least one active user with email address
• AI visibility tracking must be enabled

Understanding Alerts

Email format:

Each alert includes:

• Platform: Which AI cited you (Google AI, ChatGPT)
• User query: The question that triggered the citation
• Citation context: Snippet of the AI response showing your content
• Content cited: Which specific article/page was referenced (or domain-level if not specific)
• Detection date: When the citation was first discovered

Alert grouping:

Alerts are organized by content:

• Content-specific citations show article title + all queries that cited it
• Domain-level citations show your domain + all non-specific mentions

Managing Alerts

In the dashboard:

1. Navigate to AI Visibility Dashboard
2. View Recent Alerts section
3. Click Mark All as Read to clear notification badge

Alert states:

• New: Unread citation, appears in dashboard
• Read: Marked as seen, no longer highlighted
• Sent: Email notification already sent

Preventing duplicates:

System automatically prevents duplicate alerts:

• Same citation won't trigger multiple emails
• One email per day consolidates all new citations
• Recent alerts (within 7 days) won't re-alert

Best Practices

Set up proper tracking:

• Configure primary domain accurately
• Publish content regularly (more content = more citation opportunities)
• Use structured content (lists, tables) that AI systems prefer

Act on alerts:

• Review which content types get cited most
• Identify successful content patterns
• Create more content around high-performing topics
• Track competitor citations to identify gaps

Monitor trends:

• Weekly: Review which queries trigger your citations
• Monthly: Identify content that consistently gets cited
• Quarterly: Compare citation patterns to traffic and conversion data

Troubleshooting

Not receiving alerts?

Check:

1. AI citation alerts are enabled in Settings
2. Primary domain is configured correctly
3. Your email address is valid and active
4. Check spam/promotions folder

Alerts for wrong domain?

Fix:

1. Go to Settings → AI Visibility
2. Update Primary Domain field
3. Remove https:// and trailing slashes
4. Save and wait for next scan (9 AM daily)

Missing citations you know exist?

Remember:

• Scans happen daily at 9 AM
• Citations discovered outside scan window won't alert until next day
• Not all AI platforms provide full citation data
• Some citations may be in AI's training cutoff and not tracked

Email sent but content not visible in dashboard?

This happens when:

• Alert was marked as read automatically
• Content was deleted after citation
• Cache hasn't refreshed yet (reload page)

How Citations Are Detected

1. ILLIXIS scans for domain mentions across AI platforms using search engine intelligence
2. The system tracks new mentions since the last scan
3. New citations are queued for notification
4. A daily automated process sends consolidated emails
5. Sent citations are marked to prevent duplicates

Data retention:

• Alert records are stored indefinitely
• Email content reflects state at time of detection
• Historical citation data available in AI Visibility Dashboard
