Lead Magnets: Quizzes, Calculators, Assessments & Recommendation Engines

Why Interactive Lead Magnets Work

Static lead magnets like PDFs have declining conversion rates. People are tired of downloading ebooks they'll never read. Interactive content is different:

  • Quizzes tap into curiosity ("What type of X am I?")
  • Calculators provide immediate value ("How much could I save?")
  • Assessments offer personalized insights ("Where do I stand?")
  • Recommendation Engines deliver personalized picks ("Which product is right for me?")

These formats engage visitors, capture emails naturally, and generate qualified leads who are genuinely interested in what you offer.

Finding Lead Magnets

Go to Lead Magnets in your main navigation or visit /lead-magnets/. The dashboard shows all your lead magnets with:

  • Status (Draft, Active, Paused)
  • View count
  • Completion rate
  • Email capture rate

Creating a Lead Magnet

Step 1: Choose Your Type

Click "Create Lead Magnet" and select:

| Type | Best For | Example |
|------|----------|---------|
| Quiz | Personality matching, product recommendations | "What's Your Fitness Personality?" |
| Calculator | ROI, savings, pricing estimates | "Home Renovation Cost Calculator" |
| Assessment | Skills evaluation, readiness scoring | "Marketing Maturity Assessment" |
| Recommendation | Product/service matching from a catalog | "Find Your Perfect Skincare Routine" |

Step 2: Describe Your Goal

Tell the AI what you want to create. Be specific about:

  • Your business/products
  • Your target audience
  • What outcome you want to deliver
  • Any specific questions or topics to include

Example prompt: "Create a quiz for my fitness coaching business. Help people discover whether they're a Strength Seeker, Endurance Enthusiast, or Balance Builder. Recommend my training programs based on their results."

Step 3: Review and Customize

The AI generates a complete lead magnet. Review:

  • Questions: Edit wording, add or remove questions
  • Answers: Modify options and how they're scored
  • Results: Customize outcome descriptions and recommendations
  • Branding: Add your colors and logo

Step 4: Configure Email Capture

Decide when to capture emails:

  • Before results: Higher capture rate, some drop-off
  • After results: Lower capture rate, higher quality leads
  • Optional: Let users choose whether to provide email

Step 5: Publish

Click "Publish" to make your lead magnet live. You'll get:

  • A public URL to share
  • An embed code for your website
  • Option to create a landing page automatically

Quiz Deep Dive

Quizzes match users to outcomes based on their answers. They're ideal for product recommendations, personality typing, and entertainment.

How Quiz Scoring Works

Each answer adds points to one or more "traits." At the end, the trait with the highest score determines the user's result.

Example: A "What's Your Design Style?" quiz might have traits:

  • Modern (M)
  • Traditional (T)
  • Bohemian (B)
  • Minimalist (N)

An answer like "I prefer clean lines and neutral colors" might score: N+3, M+2

After all questions, if the user's Minimalist score is highest, they see the Minimalist result.

Creating Good Quiz Questions

  • 5-8 questions is the sweet spot
  • Make questions engaging, not tedious
  • Each question should differentiate between outcomes
  • Avoid obvious "right answers"
  • Use scenarios when possible ("You're decorating a room. Do you...")

Quiz Results

Each outcome needs:

  • A catchy name ("The Creative Explorer")
  • A description explaining what this means
  • Personalized recommendations
  • Optional: Product links or next steps

Calculator Deep Dive

Calculators perform math based on user inputs and display results. They're ideal for ROI, savings, pricing, and planning tools.

How Calculators Work

The AI generates:

  • Input fields: What users enter (numbers, dropdowns, sliders)
  • Formulas: How inputs calculate results
  • Output display: How results are presented

Example: Savings Calculator

Inputs:

  • Monthly spending ($)
  • Current method (dropdown)
  • Team size

Formula: savings = monthly_spending * efficiency_rate[current_method] * team_size * 12

Output: "You could save $X per year by switching to our solution"

Calculator Visualization

Results can include:

  • Single number highlight
  • Comparison charts
  • Progress indicators
  • Before/after breakdowns

Input Validation

Set rules for inputs:

  • Minimum and maximum values
  • Required vs optional fields
  • Number formatting (currency, percentage)

Assessment Deep Dive

Assessments score users across multiple categories and provide detailed feedback. They're ideal for skills evaluation, readiness checks, and maturity models.

How Assessment Scoring Works

Assessments have multiple scored categories. Each question contributes to one or more categories.

Example: Marketing Maturity Assessment

Categories:

  • Strategy (0-100)
  • Content (0-100)
  • Analytics (0-100)
  • Automation (0-100)

Each question asks about practices in that category. Answers score points. Final scores place users in bands:

  • 0-30: Beginner
  • 31-60: Developing
  • 61-80: Proficient
  • 81-100: Advanced

Assessment Results

Results show:

  • Overall score or maturity level
  • Per-category breakdown
  • Specific recommendations for improvement
  • Comparison to benchmarks (optional)

Question Types

Assessments often use:

  • Agreement scales ("Strongly disagree to Strongly agree")
  • Frequency questions ("Never, Sometimes, Often, Always")
  • Yes/No capability checks
  • Multiple selection ("Select all that apply")

Email Capture and ESP Sync

Capture Configuration

Control email capture behavior:

  • Required: User must provide email to see results
  • Optional: User can skip but is prompted
  • Hidden: No email capture (for brand awareness only)

ESP Integration

Leads sync automatically to your connected email platform:

  • Klaviyo: Leads added to lists with tags based on results
  • Mailchimp: Subscribers added with quiz/calculator outcome tags
  • Resend: Contacts created for transactional follow-up

Tagging Strategy

When leads sync, they're tagged with:

  • Lead magnet name
  • Result/outcome type
  • Score ranges (for assessments)
  • Completion date

This lets you segment and nurture leads based on their specific interests and needs.

Analytics

Each lead magnet tracks:

| Metric | What It Means |
|--------|---------------|
| Views | People who opened the lead magnet |
| Starts | People who answered at least one question |
| Completions | People who finished all questions |
| Email Captures | People who provided their email |
| Completion Rate | Completions / Starts |
| Capture Rate | Email Captures / Completions |

Low completion rates suggest the lead magnet is too long or questions aren't engaging. Low capture rates might mean the email gate is too aggressive.

Embedding Lead Magnets

Creating Landing Pages Automatically

When publishing a lead magnet, check "Create landing page" to generate a complete page featuring:

  • Headline and description
  • The embedded lead magnet
  • Social proof section
  • Related content links

This saves time when you want a dedicated page for promoting your quiz, calculator, or assessment.

Best Practices

1. Focus on Value Delivered The best lead magnets give genuine value. Users should feel they learned something, not that they were tricked into giving their email.

2. Keep It Short 5-8 questions for quizzes. 3-5 inputs for calculators. More than 15 questions causes significant drop-off.

3. Make Results Shareable Results people want to share on social media drive organic reach. Design outcomes that feel personal and positive.

4. Follow Up Quickly Leads from quizzes and calculators are warm. Send a follow-up email within 24 hours while they still remember engaging with your content.

5. Test Your Lead Magnet Complete it yourself before publishing. Check that results make sense, scoring is accurate, and the experience is smooth.

6. A/B Test Capture Timing Try email capture before results vs after results. Different audiences respond differently.

FAQ

Q: Can I edit a lead magnet after publishing? Yes. Changes take effect immediately. Be careful editing scoring logic on active lead magnets as it may change results for in-progress users.

Q: How do I delete a lead magnet? Unpublish it first (changes status to Draft), then delete from the Lead Magnets dashboard.

Q: Can I duplicate a lead magnet? Yes. Click the duplicate icon on any lead magnet to create a copy you can modify.

Q: Why aren't leads syncing to my ESP? Check that your ESP is connected in Settings > Integrations. Verify the API key is valid and the list/audience exists.

Q: Can I see individual responses? Yes. Each lead magnet has a "Responses" tab showing individual submissions with their answers and results.

Q: Do lead magnets work on mobile? Yes. All lead magnets are responsive and work on any device.
