There are two ways to start one: accept a Contrarian Target that ILLIXIS surfaces for you, or ask Maya directly. A contrarian piece always rebuts a third-party view, never your own published content.

Available on all paid plans (Starter, Professional, and Enterprise).

What a Contrarian Brief Contains

  • The mainstream thesis being challenged, stated plainly
  • Your contrarian position (or one derived from the counter-evidence)
  • Counter-evidence grouped by type: data points, skeptical expert voices, counter-studies, and breakdown patterns, each cited to a real source
  • A five-part article structure: hook, steelman, counter-evidence, strongest objection, actionable alternative
  • When anchored to a specific article, a direct citation of that source so the rebuttal engages the real argument, not a paraphrase

Two Ways to Start

1. Accept a Contrarian Target (recommended)

Each week, ILLIXIS scans the news it already monitors for your brand and surfaces third-party articles that advance a mainstream view you could credibly counter. These appear in the Strategy Hub as opportunities tagged Contrarian Target.

Navigate: Intelligence > Strategy Hub

  1. Find a Contrarian Target. Look for cards tagged "Contrarian Target." Each shows the article it's anchored to (with a link to read the original) and a short description of the view worth rebutting.
  2. Click "Write a contrarian response." A confirmation box opens showing the mainstream thesis ILLIXIS extracted from the article.
  3. Confirm or edit the thesis. This step matters. You are telling ILLIXIS exactly which view to argue against, so the article rebuts the real position the source takes, not a strawman. Tighten the wording if needed.
  4. Click "Write Contrarian Response." ILLIXIS runs counter-evidence research and builds the brief, anchored to that specific article. This takes a few minutes.

Why the confirmation step exists: a rebuttal is only as good as the view it argues against. Confirming the thesis keeps the article fair and on-target.

2. Ask Maya

Navigate: Intelligence > Maya

Tell Maya the view you want to challenge, for example: "Write a contrarian piece arguing against the idea that marketing automation saves teams time." Maya creates the brief from your prompt. You can also paste a third-party article URL and the mainstream view, and Maya will anchor the rebuttal to that source.

What ILLIXIS Will (and Won't) Do

Will:

  • Surface third-party articles worth rebutting, scored and capped so the list stays focused (a few per week, not a flood)
  • Steelman the mainstream view before countering it, and cite real sources for every counter-claim
  • Anchor the rebuttal to the specific article when you start from a Contrarian Target

Won't:

  • Argue against your own published content. Contrarian Targets exclude your own domain by design, so ILLIXIS never has you contradict yourself.
  • Publish anything. Like every brief, the draft waits for your review.
  • Invent statistics or quotes. The article uses only corroborated findings from the research step.

Best Practices

  • Pick a view you can genuinely counter. The strongest contrarian pieces challenge a view your positioning already disagrees with. If the mainstream take feels right to you, skip it.
  • Keep the thesis specific. "Automation is overrated" is weak. "Marketing automation platforms automate scheduling, not strategy, and most teams confuse the two" gives the article something concrete to dismantle.
  • Move while the article is fresh. Contrarian Targets are tied to recent coverage. A rebuttal published while the original is still circulating earns more attention.
  • Read the source first. Click through to the article before accepting. Confirming a thesis you have actually read keeps the rebuttal honest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do Contrarian Targets come from?

From the same news monitoring ILLIXIS already runs for your brand. It looks for recent, relevant third-party articles that advance a clear mainstream view, extracts that view, and surfaces the best few each week. There is nothing to set up.

Can ILLIXIS pick an article from my own site?

No. Targets are filtered against your own domain and any domains you list as yours, so a contrarian brief always rebuts an outside view.

I don't see any Contrarian Targets yet.

They are generated weekly and depend on your news monitoring finding relevant, rebuttable coverage. If your brand's news topics are sparse, fewer targets appear. You can always start a contrarian brief manually by asking Maya.

Can I change the angle after I accept?

Edit the mainstream thesis in the confirmation box before you start. Once the brief is generating, regenerate it if you want to adjust the position.

Is this available on my plan?

Contrarian briefs are available on all paid plans. They are not available on the free plan because they use deeper counter-evidence research.
