When to Use Content Extension

Add Depth to Thin Content

If an article is ranking but has low word count compared to competitors, extend it with additional sections. The system analyzes your existing content and adds relevant coverage without duplicating what's already there.

Example: A 600-word article on "social media marketing tips" is losing ground to 2,000-word competitor guides. Use "Expand" to triple the depth.

Update Outdated Information

When an article has good structure but outdated examples, statistics, or recommendations, use "Update" to refresh it with current information while preserving the existing framework.

Example: A 2023 guide to Instagram features needs current screenshots and new features like Threads integration.

Expand for Featured Snippets

Google featured snippets often require specific formats (lists, tables, step-by-step instructions). Use "Add Section" to append the targeted format without rewriting the entire article.

Example: An article ranking position 5 for "how to reset iPhone" needs a bulleted step-by-step section to capture the featured snippet.

Extension Types

Add Section

Appends a new comprehensive section to the end of your article. The original content remains unchanged.

What it does:

  • Analyzes existing content to avoid duplication
  • Identifies coverage gaps
  • Generates 300-800 words of complementary content
  • Adds as new H2 section at the end

Use when:

  • You want to preserve existing content exactly as written
  • The article needs a specific new topic covered
  • You're adding a FAQ or "Common Mistakes" section

Example result:
```
[Your original 1,500 words]
Common Misconceptions About [Topic]
[New 500-word section generated by extension]
```

Expand

Elaborates on existing content with more detail, examples, and insights throughout the article. This rewrites and lengthens the piece.

What it does:

  • Expands each major section with additional detail
  • Adds concrete examples and case studies
  • Includes more data points and statistics
  • Increases word count 50-100%

Use when:

  • Competing articles are significantly longer
  • Your content lacks specific examples
  • The topic deserves deeper treatment
  • Content Decay alerts show declining rankings

Example result: 1,200-word article becomes 2,000-word comprehensive guide with added examples and subsections.

Update

Refreshes content with current information, updated best practices, and recent examples. Maintains the existing structure and tone.

What it does:

  • Updates statistics and data points
  • Replaces outdated examples with recent ones
  • Adds mentions of new tools/features
  • Preserves your original structure and voice

Use when:

  • Article is more than 12 months old
  • Industry has changed (new platforms, regulations, tools)
  • Content Decay shows traffic loss
  • Competitors publish "2026 Update" versions

Example result: 2023 article about email marketing becomes 2026-current version with updated ESP features, GDPR changes, and AI personalization examples.

How to Extend Content

From Content Hub

  1. Open the article you want to extend
  2. Scroll to the sidebar
  3. Find the "More Options" section
  4. Click "Extend Content" (if not visible, ensure article status is "Ready" or "Published")
  5. Choose extension type: Add Section, Expand, or Update
  6. Click "Extend Content"
  7. Wait 1-2 minutes for processing

The system will:

  • Analyze your existing content
  • Identify gaps or outdated sections
  • Generate appropriate additions
  • Update word count automatically

Reviewing Extended Content

After extension completes:

  1. The article editor opens with new content highlighted
  2. Review additions for accuracy and brand voice
  3. Edit as needed using inline editing
  4. Check that new sections flow naturally with existing content
  5. Update meta description if word count changed significantly

After Extension

Update publish date: If you're updating outdated content, change the publish date to signal freshness to search engines.

Republish: Click "Publish" to push changes to your CMS. If using WordPress/Shopify connector, the extended version replaces the live article automatically.

Track performance: Content extended to compete for featured snippets may take 2-4 weeks to see ranking changes. Monitor via Rank Tracker.

Best Practices

Choose the Right Extension Type

Add Section for targeted additions without touching existing prose. Lowest risk of disrupting what's already working.

Expand when competitors have 2x-3x more content and you need comprehensive coverage. Higher word count often correlates with rankings for informational queries.

Update when structure is good but examples are stale. Fastest way to refresh without complete rewrite.

Don't Extend Too Frequently

Extending the same article multiple times can dilute focus. If you've extended twice and still not ranking, the problem may be:

  • Wrong target keyword (too competitive)
  • Lack of backlinks (not authority)
  • Poor user experience (bounce rate issues)

Check Content Decay dashboard to confirm traffic/ranking issues before extending again.

Combine with Other Strategies

After extending:

  • Generate social posts to drive initial traffic to the updated version
  • Create email newsletter highlighting "Updated for 2026" angle
  • Add internal links from related articles
  • Generate video version for YouTube

Extended content gives you fresh material to promote across channels.

Quota Management

Content Extension is a quota-based feature:

| Plan | Monthly Quota |
|------|---------------|
| Starter | 10 extensions |
| Professional | 30 extensions |
| Scale | 100 extensions |

Check your remaining quota in Settings > Subscription.

Monitoring Results

Content Decay Dashboard

After extending content to fix decay issues, monitor the Content Decay dashboard. You should see:

Week 1-2: Status changes from "Critical" to "Acknowledged"
Week 3-4: Position stabilizes or improves
Week 5-8: Traffic recovers to previous levels or higher

If rankings don't improve after 6 weeks, the extension may not have addressed the core issue. Consider:

  • Checking competitor content for what they have that you still don't
  • Adding more visual content (charts, screenshots)
  • Building backlinks to the page

Rank Tracker

Add extended articles to Rank Tracker to monitor position changes:

  1. Go to Rank Tracker
  2. Add keyword (if not already tracked)
  3. Check position weekly
  4. Look for upward trend 3-6 weeks post-extension

Featured snippet wins usually happen faster (1-3 weeks) if you added the right format.

Google Search Console

Compare impressions and clicks before/after extension:

  1. Open GSC Integration
  2. Filter by URL of extended article
  3. Compare 28-day periods (before vs after)
  4. Look for increases in impressions (visibility) and CTR

Troubleshooting

Extension Takes Longer Than 2 Minutes

Normal processing: 1-2 minutes. If it takes 3-5 minutes, the system may be analyzing particularly long content (5,000+ words) or complex structure. Wait for the notification bell to alert completion.

New Sections Don't Match Tone

The extension uses your brand voice settings from Tenant Settings. If tone feels off:

  1. Go to Settings > Brand Voice
  2. Update voice description with specific examples
  3. Try extending again

The brand voice model learns from your edits over time (Learning Quality System).

Added Content Duplicates Existing Sections

This is rare but can happen if your original content has irregular heading structure. Fix:

  1. Review the extended version
  2. Delete duplicate sections manually
  3. Consider using "Update" instead of "Add Section" for rewrites

Report duplicates via Maya ("This extension duplicated content") so the system learns to avoid it.

Extension Reduces Quality Score

If Content Quality score drops after extension:

  1. Check the grading report to see which category declined
  2. Common issue: Added content introduces clichés or weak examples
  3. Use Auto-Fix feature to clean up issues
  4. Re-extend with "Update" option to rewrite problem sections

Integration with Other Features

Content Decay Workflow

When Content Decay alerts flag declining content:

  1. Maya recommends "Refresh this content"
  2. Click recommendation to open article
  3. Use "Update" extension to refresh with current info
  4. Mark decay alert as "Refreshed"
  5. Monitor for ranking recovery

This is the fastest path from decay alert to published update.

Maya Recommendations

Maya detects when content is underperforming due to thin coverage:

Maya: "Your article on 'email marketing' is 800 words, but top-ranking competitors average 2,400 words. Extending it could improve rankings."

You can reply: "Extend that article" and Maya will trigger the Expand option automatically.

Repurpose Extended Content

After extending an article:

  1. Visit Social Extensions to create posts highlighting the new sections
  2. Generate email newsletter featuring "Updated Guide" angle
  3. Create video script focusing on new content

Extended content gives you fresh material to distribute without creating entirely new articles.

Common Use Cases

Competitor Outrank Defense

Scenario: You rank #3 for "content marketing strategy." A competitor publishes a 4,000-word guide and jumps to #1. Your article is 1,600 words.

Solution: Use "Expand" to double your depth. Add case studies, data visualizations, and tool recommendations. Republish and monitor for position recovery.

Seasonal Content Refresh

Scenario: Your "Holiday Email Templates" article ranks well every November but is based on 2022 examples.

Solution: Two weeks before high-traffic season, use "Update" to refresh with current year examples, new platforms (TikTok Shop, etc.), and updated best practices.

Featured Snippet Capture

Scenario: You rank #4 for "how to write meta descriptions." Position 1 has a featured snippet with a bulleted list. Your article is prose-only.

Solution: Use "Add Section" to append a bullet-pointed "Quick Steps" section at the top. This gives Google the structured format it's looking for.

Authority Building

Scenario: Your guide to "SEO basics" is comprehensive but lacks credibility signals like statistics and expert quotes.

Solution: Use "Expand" to add data points, research citations, and concrete examples. This increases topical authority and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T).
