What Arbitrage Means

Think of it like financial arbitrage, but for content. You're finding keywords where the market (SERPs) is underserving the demand (search volume). These keywords have:

  • High search volume - People are actively searching
  • High commercial value - Advertisers are willing to pay (measured by CPC)
  • Low competition - Competitors are weak or missing
  • Weak SERPs - Forum posts, thin content, or low-authority sites ranking

Finding Arbitrage Opportunities

Navigate to Intelligence → Content Arbitrage Finder.

Running a Scan

Click Run Discovery to start a scan. The system will:

  1. Expand your brand keywords using keyword research data
  2. Filter by minimum thresholds (volume ≥100, difficulty ≤50, CPC ≥$0.50)
  3. Analyze SERP weakness for top candidates (forums, thin content, low domain authority)
  4. Calculate arbitrage scores
  5. Save opportunities scoring 30+

A full scan analyzes up to 200 keywords. Discovery takes 5-10 minutes.

Understanding the Score

Each opportunity gets an Arbitrage Score (0-100) based on four factors:

| Factor | Weight | Calculation | What It Measures |
|--------|--------|-------------|------------------|
| Volume | 30 points | min(volume/5000, 1.0) × 30 | Search demand |
| CPC | 25 points | min(cpc/5.0, 1.0) × 25 | Commercial value |
| Difficulty (Inverse) | 25 points | ((100-difficulty)/100) × 25 | How easy to rank |
| SERP Weakness | 20 points | (weakness_score/100) × 20 | Competitor vulnerability |

Example calculation:

  • Keyword: "meal prep containers for portion control"
  • Volume: 2,400/month → 2400/5000 × 30 = 14.4 points
  • CPC: $3.20 → 3.20/5.0 × 25 = 16 points
  • Difficulty: 35 → (100-35)/100 × 25 = 16.25 points
  • SERP Weakness: 65/100 → 65/100 × 20 = 13 points
  • Total: 60 (Strong Opportunity)

Priority Tiers

Opportunities are grouped by score:

  • Exceptional (80+): Highest priority - weak competition, strong demand
  • Strong (60-79): Very promising - good balance of factors
  • Good (30-59): Worth considering - solid opportunities

What SERP Weakness Means

The system analyzes the top 10 results for weakness signals:

Forum Content (15 points per result)

Reddit, Quora, or forum posts in top 10. These are easy to outrank with comprehensive articles.

Example: If 2 of the top 10 results are Reddit threads, that's 30 weakness points.

Thin Content (10 points per result)

Pages with less than 800 words. Indicates competitors haven't invested in depth.

Example: 3 thin pages = 30 weakness points.

Low Domain Authority (5 points per result)

Sites with domain rating below 30. Means you can compete even without high authority.

Example: 4 low-DR sites = 20 weakness points.

Average Domain Rating Bonus

If average DR across top 10 is below 50, you get additional points (max 50 points).

Formula: max(0, 50 - avg_dr)

Opportunity Table

Each row shows:

  • Keyword: The target phrase
  • Score: Arbitrage score with colored badge (exceptional/strong/good)
  • Volume: Monthly search volume
  • CPC: Cost per click (commercial intent signal)
  • Difficulty: Keyword difficulty (0-100, lower is easier)
  • SERP Weakness: Weakness score out of 20 points
  • Actions: Create Brief or Dismiss

Weakness Indicator

The colored dot shows SERP weakness level:

  • High (15-20): Very weak competition - prioritize these
  • Medium (8-14): Moderate weakness - good opportunities
  • Low (0-7): Stronger competition - but still qualified

Taking Action

Creating a Brief

Click Create Brief next to any opportunity. The system will:

  1. Queue a keyword brief generation task
  2. Update opportunity status to "Brief Created"
  3. Show a "View Brief" button once ready

The brief will include full competitive analysis, target keywords, and content strategy.

Dismissing Opportunities

Click the X button to dismiss an opportunity. This hides it from your list. Use this for:

  • Keywords outside your niche
  • Topics you've already covered
  • Opportunities that don't match your strategy

Estimated Monthly Traffic

Shows potential traffic if you rank in top 5. Formula: search_volume × estimated_ctr.

This helps prioritize opportunities beyond just the score.

Strategy Tips

Focus on Exceptional First

Opportunities scoring 80+ are your best bets. These have maximum mismatch between demand and competition. Create briefs for these immediately.

Check CPC for Intent

High CPC ($2+) indicates commercial intent. People searching these terms are often ready to buy. Prioritize these if you sell products or services.

Forums Are Gold

If you see 2+ forum results in top 10, that's a strong signal. Forum answers are often incomplete or outdated. A comprehensive article will outrank them.

Thin Content = Opportunity

If top-ranking pages are under 800 words, you have an advantage. Create a 2,000+ word guide and you'll likely rank above them.

Look for Clusters

If you see multiple related keywords scoring well, that's a sign of a broader content gap. Consider creating a pillar page that targets all related terms.

Scheduling Scans

Arbitrage opportunities change as competition evolves. Schedule regular scans:

  1. Go to Settings → Scheduled Tasks
  2. Find "Content Arbitrage Discovery"
  3. Set frequency (recommended: weekly)

This ensures you catch new opportunities as they emerge.

Automation Schedule

Content arbitrage scans run automatically on a weekly schedule:

  • When: Every Monday at 3:00 AM UTC
  • What it does: Analyzes competitors' top-performing content to identify gaps where they rank but you don't
  • Processing: The scan examines keyword opportunities, SERP weakness signals, and commercial value indicators
  • Results: New opportunities appear in your Discover feed after the scan completes

You don't need to manually trigger scans—the system handles this automatically. However, you can still run manual scans anytime using the Run Discovery button if you want fresher data between scheduled runs.

Tip: Check your Discover feed on Monday mornings (after 3:00 AM UTC) to see the latest arbitrage opportunities before your competitors do.

How This Differs from Keyword Discovery

Keyword Discovery finds keywords you could target based on search intent and relevance.

Content Arbitrage finds keywords where you have a competitive advantage right now because the current top-ranking content is weak.

Use both together:

  • Keyword Discovery → What should we write about?
  • Content Arbitrage → What can we win quickly?

Integration with Strategy Hub

All arbitrage opportunities also appear in the Strategy Hub under the "Content Arbitrage" filter. This lets you compare arbitrage opportunities against other intelligence sources (trends, GSC insights, competitive gaps).

Quotas

Arbitrage Discovery Quota

  • Starter: 1 scan/month (200 keywords max)
  • Professional: 4 scans/month (200 keywords max)
  • Enterprise: Unlimited scans

Common Questions

Q: Why aren't I seeing any opportunities? Your niche might be highly competitive. Try:

  • Expanding your seed keywords to include more long-tail terms
  • Lowering the min score filter to 30
  • Adding more competitor domains for gap analysis

Q: How often should I run discovery? Weekly is ideal. SERPs change constantly - new opportunities emerge as content ages and competitors publish.

Q: Should I target keywords with high CPC? Yes, if you monetize through ads, affiliate links, or sell products. High CPC signals commercial intent - these visitors convert better.

Q: What if a keyword looks good but isn't relevant to my brand? Dismiss it. The scoring algorithm doesn't know your brand positioning. Only target keywords that align with your content strategy.

Q: Can I target multiple arbitrage keywords in one article? Yes! If you see several related keywords (e.g., "meal prep for weight loss," "meal prep for muscle gain"), create one comprehensive guide that targets all related terms.

Success Metrics

Track these metrics to measure arbitrage success:

  • Time to Page 1: How long after publishing does content reach top 10?
  • Final Position: Where do you stabilize after 90 days?
  • Traffic vs. Projection: Actual traffic compared to estimated monthly traffic
  • Conversion Rate: Do high-CPC keywords actually convert?

Monitor via Content Hub → Performance tab. Articles from arbitrage opportunities will note their source in the brief metadata.

What Happens After Publishing

After you publish content targeting an arbitrage keyword:

  1. 30-day check: System verifies if you're ranking in top 20
  2. 60-day check: Measures position improvement
  3. 90-day check: Compares actual traffic to estimate

This data feeds back into the scoring algorithm, making future predictions more accurate for your site's authority and niche.

Best Practices

Invest in Depth

Don't just barely beat competitors. If top results are 600 words, write 2,000+. Comprehensive content builds long-term authority.

Target Featured Snippets

Many arbitrage keywords have weak featured snippets (or none). Structure your content to win:

  • Use clear H2 headers that match questions
  • Provide concise definitions in first paragraph
  • Use lists and tables where appropriate

Update Regularly

Once you win an arbitrage keyword, protect it. Add to your content decay monitoring and refresh every 6-12 months.

Build Internal Links

After ranking, add internal links from other relevant content. This strengthens the page and helps it maintain position as competition increases.

Track Competitor Response

Monitor if competitors update their content after you rank. If they do, you may need to refresh your article to maintain position.
