What This Does

Competitive Gap Analysis identifies content opportunities where your competitors rank but you don't. It analyzes up to 5 competitor domains across multiple dimensions to find actionable gaps you can close.

The analysis compares:

  1. Content gaps - Topics competitors cover that you're missing
  2. Keyword opportunities - High-value keywords competitors rank for
  3. Backlink gaps - Sites linking to competitors but not you
  4. SERP positions - Where you rank vs. competitors for target keywords

The output is a professional PDF report with executive summary, gap details, and prioritized recommendations.

When to Use This

  • Quarterly strategy review: Identify new content opportunities every 3 months
  • Competitive research: Understand what competitors are doing that you're not
  • Content planning: Prioritize which topics to target next based on competitor success
  • Stakeholder reporting: Generate PDF reports to share with executives or clients who don't use ILLIXIS
  • Pitch preparation: Back up content recommendations with competitive data

Recommended frequency: Quarterly or when entering new markets/topics

Creating a Gap Analysis Report

Navigate: Reports > Gap Analysis > Create Gap Analysis

Required Information

Competitor Domains (1-5) Enter competitor domains you want to analyze against. Use root domains only.

Good examples:

  • competitor1.com
  • competitor2.io
  • competitor3.co

Avoid:

  • https://competitor1.com (no protocol)
  • www.competitor1.com (no www)
  • competitor1.com/blog (no paths)

Auto-populated from settings: If you've configured competitor domains in Tenant Settings > Competitive Intelligence, they'll be pre-filled. You can edit them or add more.

Optional Information

Focus Keywords Specific keywords to focus the analysis on. Leave blank to use all your tracked keywords from briefs and tenant settings.

When to specify:

  • You're launching in a new category and want focused analysis
  • You know the exact competitive battleground
  • You want to limit API costs by analyzing fewer keywords

When to leave blank:

  • You want comprehensive coverage across all your content areas
  • You haven't narrowed down specific keywords yet

Report Title Defaults to "Gap Analysis - [date]". Customize for specific purposes like "Q1 2025 Competitor Analysis" or "Wellness Category Gaps".

The Analysis Process

Report generation takes 2-5 minutes. Here's what happens:

Phase 1: Data Collection

  • Fetches SERP results for target keywords
  • Retrieves competitor keyword rankings
  • Pulls backlink data for your domain and competitors
  • Analyzes domain authority and referring domains

Phase 2: Gap Identification

  • Compares competitor content topics against yours
  • Identifies keywords competitors rank for that you don't
  • Finds sites linking to competitors but not you
  • Calculates gap scores for each opportunity

Phase 3: PDF Generation

  • Builds executive summary with key metrics
  • Creates competitor profile table
  • Lists top 50 content gaps sorted by opportunity
  • Lists top 100 keyword opportunities
  • Generates actionable recommendations

Understanding the Report

Executive Summary

Key Metrics:

  • Competitors Analyzed: Number of domains compared
  • Content Gaps Found: Total topics competitors cover that you don't
  • Keyword Opportunities: Total keywords you could target
  • High Priority Actions: Number of critical recommendations
  • Est. Traffic Opportunity: Potential monthly visits from closing gaps
  • Top Threat: Competitor with most gaps and strongest position

Key Insight: One-sentence takeaway highlighting the biggest opportunity

Competitor Profiles

Ranks competitors by "threat score" (0-100) based on:

  • Number of content gaps they exposed
  • Number of keyword opportunities they have
  • Domain authority
  • Number of referring domains

This shows which competitors are your biggest threats and where they're outperforming you.

Content Gaps

Lists topics competitors rank for that you're missing. Each gap includes:

  • Keyword: The search term
  • Competitor: Which competitor ranks for this
  • Position: Where they rank (#1-20)
  • Gap Score (0-100): Opportunity rating based on competitor position and traffic

High gap scores (70+): Competitor ranks in top 3 positions with significant traffic. High priority to create this content.

Medium gap scores (40-69): Competitor has decent rankings. Still worth targeting.

Low gap scores (<40): Competitor ranks poorly or keyword has low traffic. Lower priority.

Keyword Opportunities

Keywords competitors rank for that you don't. Each opportunity includes:

  • Keyword: The search term
  • Volume: Monthly searches
  • Difficulty (0-100): How hard to rank (lower is easier)
  • Opportunity Score (0-100): Overall rating based on volume, difficulty, and competitor position

How opportunity score is calculated:

  • Volume score: Higher search volume = higher score
  • Difficulty score: Lower difficulty = higher score (inverted)
  • Position score: Competitor ranking #11-20 = easier to outrank

High opportunity scores (70+): High volume, low difficulty, weak competitor position. Target immediately.

Backlink Analysis

Compares backlink profiles:

  • Your referring domains vs. competitors
  • Your total backlinks vs. competitors
  • Your domain authority vs. competitors
  • Link gap count (sites linking to competitors but not you)

What to look for:

  • Large disparities in referring domains (they have 500, you have 50)
  • Specific high-authority domains you should target for outreach
  • Whether backlinks are a major gap or not

Recommendations

Prioritized action list combining all analysis. Each recommendation includes:

  • Type: Content, keyword, or backlink opportunity
  • Priority: High or medium
  • Title: What to do
  • Rationale: Why this matters (competitor position, traffic estimates, data)
  • Action: Specific next step

Focus on high-priority recommendations first. These offer the best ROI.

How to Act on Gaps

Content Gaps

When you see a content gap:

  1. Click through to the competitor's ranking page
  2. Review their content structure and approach
  3. Identify what they're missing (your differentiation angle)
  4. Create a Keyword Brief targeting that keyword
  5. Write comprehensive content that beats the competitor

Don't copy the competitor. Use the gap as inspiration, then differentiate.

Keyword Opportunities

When you see a keyword opportunity:

  1. Verify search intent matches your business
  2. Check if you have existing content that could be optimized for this keyword
  3. If not, add to content calendar
  4. Create a Keyword Brief for the term
  5. Track rankings after publishing

Prioritize by opportunity score AND relevance to your business. A 90-score keyword that's off-brand is worse than a 60-score keyword perfectly aligned.

Backlink Gaps

When you see a backlink gap:

  1. Visit the referring domain
  2. Understand why they link to competitors (guest posts? directory? resource page?)
  3. Craft outreach email explaining why your content is a better fit
  4. Follow up if no response in 2 weeks

Focus on high-authority domains (DA 50+) first. These move the needle more.

Automation Schedule

ILLIXIS automatically collects competitive SERP data to power gap analysis:

Weekly SERP Tracking (Sundays at 4:00 AM UTC)

  • Checks rankings for all tracked keywords across your domain and configured competitors
  • Compares your positions vs. competitor positions for shared keywords
  • Identifies keywords where competitors outrank you

How This Feeds Gap Analysis:

  • Gap analysis reports use the most recent SERP data from weekly tracking
  • After Sunday's SERP update completes, gap metrics reflect the latest competitive landscape
  • Running a gap analysis mid-week uses data from the previous Sunday's scan

What Gets Tracked:

  • Keywords from your published briefs
  • Keywords configured in Tenant Settings > Core Keywords
  • Competitor domains from Tenant Settings > Competitive Intelligence

Timing Recommendation: For the freshest data, run gap analysis reports on Monday or Tuesday after the Sunday SERP scan completes. Reports generated later in the week still use valid data but may be 5-6 days old.

Best Practices

Pre-Analysis Setup

Configure competitors in Tenant Settings first:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Competitive Intelligence
  2. Add 3-5 main competitors
  3. These will auto-populate when creating Gap Analysis reports

Identify your core keywords: Create Keyword Briefs for your main topics so ILLIXIS knows what keywords to analyze.

Interpreting Results

Not all gaps are worth closing.

  • A competitor ranking #18 for a low-volume keyword isn't a threat
  • Focus on gaps where competitors rank in top 10 positions
  • Prioritize keywords aligned with your business goals

Compare reports over time: Run quarterly reports and compare results. Are you closing gaps? Are new gaps appearing?

Taking Action

Don't try to close every gap.

  • Pick 5-10 high-priority gaps per quarter
  • Focus on content gaps first (easier to execute than backlinks)
  • Track which gaps you target and measure results

Create a Content Calendar from gaps: Use recommendations to populate next quarter's content plan.

Troubleshooting

Report stuck at "Generating": Check back in 5 minutes. Large analyses can take time. If stuck for 10+ minutes, contact support.

"No competitor data available": Competitor domain may be new/small with insufficient search data available. Try different competitors.

PDF download shows error: Report generation may have failed. Click "Regenerate" to retry.

Share link expired: Generate a new share link. Links expire after 30 days for security.

Too many content gaps found (500+): Use "Focus Keywords" to narrow analysis. Or recognize you're in a highly competitive space and need more content.

"How is this different from Strategy Hub competitive gaps?" Strategy Hub shows real-time insights and alerts. Gap Analysis is a comprehensive, point-in-time PDF report suitable for sharing with stakeholders.

"Can I analyze more than 5 competitors?" Current limit is 5 to manage API costs. If you need more, run multiple reports.

"How accurate is the traffic opportunity estimate?" Based on competitor position and search volume. Treat as directional, not guaranteed.

"Should I target all keyword opportunities?" No. Filter by relevance to your business and current priorities. Quality over quantity.

"What if I don't know my competitors?" Use Google search for your main keywords. Top-ranking domains (excluding big brands like Wikipedia) are your competitors.
